A few miles from
Pisa, surrounded by the Pisan mountains, is the Valgraziosa, the
wide and lush
valley
of
Grace
, so called by the Carthusian monks who settled here in the
XIV century.
The town is placed in the
golden triangle of
Pisa,
Lucca
and
Florence. The surrounding hills that divide
Pisa
and
Lucca
provide a natural
ampitheatre.
Monuments of historic
interest such as the Certosa di Calci, famous as one of the
world’s most beautiful monastic monuments, with splendid
frescoes in the 1500 rooms and near the hamlet of Montemagno,
where Pope Eugenio III was born. Next to the Certosa is a
Natural
History
Museum.
The town boasts a
Romanesque Pieve constructed in the second part of the XI
century. Since this time there have been transformations and
alterations to the original building.
The heart of the town is a
5 minute stroll where you can find shops for all your needs.
Pop out for an ice cream at one of the gellaterie, a
bottle of olive oil from a local producer or a freshly baked
pane for breakfast. The
town has its own newsagent to purchase bus tickets, petrol
station, bank, hairdresser, post office, hardware shop,
pharmacy and supermarket.
There are five restaurants within walking distance with
many more a short drive into the hills or in
Pisa
or
Lucca.
