Montecatini is renowned for spas, springs and thermal baths, the town of Montecatini Terme is a mecca for health and fitness seekers. Don't neglect the delightful Montecatini Alto, connected to the main town via a funicular railway.

Fishing

There are trout and (sometimes) salmon in the river outside the front door!  You cannot fish in this or any other river (even for coarse fishing) without a licence (no matter how old or young you are).  The police and authorities are very hot about this.  You can buy an annual licence from the post office for €23 but you will need to get a form first.

Much easier and more productive is to fish in the sea (no licence required) or in any (nearby) private lake(s).

Lago di Cavalieri is a single lake mixed fishery that charges €7 a day for some of the best and, perhaps, easiest carp fishing in Europe!  Expect fish to 20 lbs with literally hundreds from 1½ lbs upwards.  Sweetcorn is the bait to use and fished close in.  If you have not got your own tackle, this can be purchased cheaply from any of the local larger supermarkets whilst bait (sweetcorn and maggots) can be bought at the fishery.  Unlike England, many Italians go fishing with their families and this fishery welcomes them with snacks and drinks available to purchase on site.

The Massaciuccoli Lake

The lake and the Macchia Lucchese are a part of the Parco Naturale di Migliarino-San Rossore-Massaciuccoli, which, thanks to the various ecosystems of which it is composed of, presents a varied and highly interesting flora as well as a numerous fauna. The Lago di Massaciuccoli, with the marshy area that surrounds it, through its drainage canals, constitutes a humid coastal area whose waters are rich with fish and rare vegetable species, while amid the bog grass (Cladium mariscus) and the thin cane (Phragmites australis) passing and migratory birds build nests.

Ski-ing in Abetone

It is impossible to try and lay out a classification of the most beautiful tracks of the Abetone complex, but perhaps, when the weather is good and the sky particularly clear, the Val di Luce (Valley of Light) assumes an unsurpassable air: a jewel of nature pinpointed with icy lakes, majestic ridges, breath taking skiing tracks that cut into the mountain sides almost without solutions of continuity. Once you’ve left the car at the wide parking space, those who need a bit of practice can enjoy the ski lifts in the training field; for those who haven’t got problems they have the one choice alone.

The Alpe delle Tre Potenze (1940 metres) is the one dominating the valley and from up there, reachable with the new three placed chair lift, you can opt for different tracks.

Windsurfing in Livorno
A few metres away from the port there is one of the most interesting and well known places for surf lovers, known as the Tre Ponti (three bridges), where sportspeople meet to practice a few hours of pure energy riding the waves on their multicoloured boards.
